Can anyone recommend an online DipTrans Course?
Are there any which are known to be particularly good?
Any to avoid?

I did a French to English certificate with Words Language Services in Ireland ( www.wls.ie ). They also do a DipTrans preparation course but I wasn't ready for that at the time. I was more than pleased with the value I got from my course; in fact, if was far more 'academic' and 'professional' than I expected, with really useful feedback from my tutor, who clearly took the job very seriously.

Thankyou Sheila. So you say you weren't ready for the DipTrans at the time - so am I right in thinking that the DipTrans would be more advanced than the one you took?

I did this course several years ago, and found it much more helpful that I had imagined. It is quite academic and you lose points if you do not stick to the guidelines for completion of assignments, which took a little getting used to after several years out of academic study. However, the feedback is thorough and despite having worked in translation for 5 years already (at the time of doing the certificate), I really benefited from it, got to polish my technique and felt more confident.

Deadlines are pretty flexible, you have 2 years to complete 8 assignments, but I completed it in about 6 months, if I remember correctly.

Well, the DipTrans isn't a course - it's an exam - whereas the certificate I took was marked on continual assessment. The WLS certificate is a basic qualification, which was fine for me as I was a beginner in professional translation. It gives you the knowhow to deal with all sorts of complications you'll come across every day - such as how to deal with acronyms and proper nouns, foreign-language text, 'untranslatables' etc. And it gives you experience in dealing with all types of texts - legal, medical, business, official documents such as birth certificates, etc. You don't just translate - in fact that was the easiest part for me and where I scored best! You have to do a lot of research and discuss various possibilities, and then defend your choices.
The DipTrans exam has particularities of its own. I believe it even has to be done without access to the Internet etc? Like any test or exam (the driving test is a good example), you have to prepare if you're to give your best performance. You need to know exactly what they'll be expecting of you, and that won't necessarily be what your clients expect. So the WLS course that prepares you for the DipTrans is far more extensive and intensive, I believe - it certainly costs more  .
I'd have done the diploma course and taken the DipTrans, but it never really became necessary. I've had a lot of jobs closed to me because I didn't attend uni back in the '70s  , but nobody has ever said I had to have the DipTrans. In fact, very few clients express any interest in my qualifications, and a great deal of interest in my experience.

I took the DipTrans (Advanced) course with The Translator's Studio and passed all of DipTrans papers first time. More importantly, the course helped me to become a better translator. I enjoyed working with Gwen so much that I've now become a tutor on the course.
