cover

He exerts a lot of pressure defensively on the opposition and above all gives/provides/offers good cover to the wingers.

O algo así.

He sounds good!

Thanks, James
agree Neil Ashby : Defensively he pressurizes the opposition....sounds more natural in my mind. "AND provides good cover, above all, to the wingers".

Thanks, Dr Neil. Yes, 'pressurizes' works - and I now think just 'puts pressure on' might be best.
neutral chica nueva : substitutions? relevar = (Dep) Reemplazarse sucesivamente los integrantes de un equipo durante una carrera; relevo = acción de relevar o relevarse en una guardia o carrera (Diccionario de la Lengua Castellana); Thank you!

No, you've got the wrong context: this is football, where to substitute in that sense is 'sustituir', it's not a 'carrera'. I note that you're not actually a Spanish translator.
agree moken : Definitely the term. Just a minor remark: laterales=full backs, not wingers. Merely a slip no doubt, but you wouldn't want it to confuse Mónica. :O)

Thanks. I thought 'lateral' could be full back or winger - and my dictionaries say so too. Not always easy to say which is which in the modern game - Gareth Bale etc.
