planteamiento

How would you translate a heading wihin a research paper entitled "Planteamiento"? It is a sort of introduction to the topic discussed in the paper. Approach wouldn't really work. The paper is from the field of the Social Sciences.

Thank you everyone.

Thank you so much, everyone! I will go for Overview in the end, but all your entries have been really useful.
Billh Feb 13, 2013:
Good question this. I have spent 20 years searching for a useful answer to this question. I have more or less come to the conclusion that there is no one single word which will cover it. I look forward to the answers....
HRPoole (X) Feb 13, 2013:
I still think 'approach' is correct at this point. If it is the first sub-heading after the abstract and seems to be the author's angle for tackling/approaching the topic then it seems the best translation. It's how the author starts their study of the topic.
crinolina (asker) Feb 13, 2013:
You are right, Introduction could work. Although my gut tells me Introduction would not be really it as then the writer would just have used Introducción, but rather used Planteamiento instead... Abstract wouldn't be it. This is the first sub-heading after the abstract, in the body of the article.

Thanks so much for your reply.
philgoddard Feb 13, 2013:
Could you explain the context a bit more? My first thought would be "approach". Why doesn't it work here? And if not, and you say it's a kind of introduction, what's wrong with "introduction"?

agree Andy Watkinson : Don't see what's wrong with approach

agree Alistair Ian Spearing Ortiz : Ditto.

agree Toni Castano : IMO this is the best rendering by far: "approach".

disagree Billh : I could accept approach in some cases but from seeing this word so many times methodology is wrong.

Why is it wrong? That's just your opinion. This doesn't justify a disagree.
agree Edward Tully : All research papers differ in format after the abstract, so there is no need to look for a "one size fits all" term - "approach" is the best option.

Thanks, HRPoole. :-)
neutral philgoddard : Now that we have a bit more context, it clearly doesn't mean this. Not your fault!

Overview

This would be another option, and one that's widely used as a header. "Planteamiento" does sound and odd choice of words in Spanish, but I am going by your description.
Peer comment(s):

agree neilmac : Nice option, George ;)

Much appreciated
agree Billh : I think this is another very good option. The problem I think is that the same English word will not fit every usage of the Spanish word IMHO.

Thanks, Bill. Aftrer seeing the other suggestions, I would use this one if it were my translation.

Meant to say, it would help to see some of the text under this heading...
Peer comment(s):

agree Billh : I think this is a great option. So many times I have tried to find a word for this and of the answers given this is the best.

In my experience, authors in the social sciences area sometimes like to avoid the traditional Abstract/Introduction/Materials and Methods/Discussion/Conclusions format if possible.
