Italian term

operatore della moda

Italian to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Is this a fashion designer or just someone who works in fashion? If so, what would he/she be called? Fashion operator doesn't sound right to me.

The piece I'm translating is about a course to become an "operatore di moda".

Thanks for any help!

Fashion professional vs fashion designer @ philgoddard

"Operatore della moda"/"fashion professional" are hypernyms that include, but are not restricted to, "stilista"/"designer". Even a design-oriented institution like Central St Martins:

http://www.arts.ac.uk/csm/courses/undergraduate/ba-fashion/

offers plenty of courses that train fashion professionals who are not directly involved in design (journalists, photographers, retailers and so on).

fashion professional

"Professional" can be quite a good option for the generic term "operatore".

It could be anything, a designer, a sales manager, a journalist, but in this case they refer to manualità and creatività so it must be a course for fashion designers

fashion designer

It says "realizzare il proprio lavoro, vederlo prodotto in larga scala", which to me can only mean a designer.

This also solves the problem of what to call the course: fashion design.

Another possibility is "design technician". For example:

"Operatore di moda su computer
Corso individuale per la preparazione su computer dei modelli nei laboratori d'abbigliamento e nelle sale taglio."

So this would be "computer fashion designer/design technician".

agree Janice Giffin : Having looked at several fashion school websites, the diploma/degree course description for this title corresponds to that of a fashion designer

Yes, and I don't think either of the two answers would work as a course title.
neutral Giles Watson : 1) "Fashion designer" is an inference, not a translation. 2) "Operatore della moda" is not a course title in the Italian 3) Juliet might need to use "designer" in a more specific sense elsewhere in her translation.

1) Try Googling the Italian (or click on my reference); 2) It's not unusual for the job title to appear on degree certificates; 3) I'm sure she can deal with that.
