Chinese to English Medical Medical: Instruments
This is a heading in a medical instrument test report (检测报告) from China. Next to it is the simple phrase 请参见下页. Google search throws up "test basis" and "detection principle." these do not sound like specialist terms, which is what I am seeking.

Your addendum I have noted your two addenda to your original answer. The quotation in your first addenda suggests clearly to me that 依據 and 方法 might in fact very well be used interchangeably. Your second addenda suggests that they are indeed used interchangeably. We are concerned here with specialist usage, not general supposition.

I made the explicit point when I raised the question that I was seeking the specialist term. It seems probable that I found it in the document I identified on the internet. I think we have probably exhausted this discussion.

literal or not, it is not the concern The concern is that if your translation is right, the source must be wrong. The reason is that 依据 can never be used to mean "method", as you used in your translation. It is just inconceivable to use 依据 to mean "method," no matter what the context is.

The document was from a PRC medical instruments company; the natural presumption would be that it was produced by native Chinese speakers. It was an extremely professional-looking document. The client was in France. The target language was UK English. Language is often used to mean things beyond its literal meaning, and that can happen in specialist situations. Translations should be appropriate. That does not necessarily mean literal.

Well, it is still wrong. Maybe the authors of your source file/the reference you found are not native speakers of Chinese. It can also be the case that the native Chinese speakers who wrote these texts were not that serious about their own writing.

I agree that on the face of it 檢測依據 doesn't literally mean 'testing method' but, as I pointed out, I found it used in a published document from the same company in the same context, a context in which it made sense. I'm grateful for your comments. The translation has been submitted and the client seems satisfied.

I don't think it's testing method. the 依据 should be references such as standards, codes, specifications that the testing method is based on.

Thank you very much for your answers. I ultimately decided on "testing method." It made the best sense in the context and I happened to find on the internet a document from the same company that produced my source document using precisely that phrase. I'm very grateful to you.

On the website list below, both 检测依据/检测方法 are translated as "Test Method," and that is a blatant mistake on their test form.

检测方法 is listed as one of the three columns in the form named as 检测依据, but both were translated as "Test Method." Could that be possibly right?

In the second website listed above, 检测方法 is only one item of 检测依据. 检测依据 include 检测方法 and more. The relationship of these two is "a part to a whole." In Chinese, they are totally different concepts, but they were translated into the same English term.

This is not a "specialist usage." Instead, it was just an incorrect translation by their translator.
