Dates in Excel file not showing in Studio Thread poster: Daniel Weston

Hello - I'm translating a fairly large project in Trados Studio. The files are mostly Excel files. There are some dates in DD/MM/YY format in the source files and they do not show up at all in Trados Studio. Then they reappear in the target text unchanged. Does anyone know how I can get Studio to show me those dates so I can change them?
Any help would be much appreciated! | | | Adam Łobatiuk Poland Local time: 19:25 Member (2009) English to Polish + ... No need to change them (probably) | Feb 12, 2011 |
Hi Daniel,
The way dates are displayed depend on the cell settings in Excel and on the computer locale settings. If you are working with a French file on a US system, you probably need to select the date cells (entire columns or rows, if applicable), right-click, select Format Cells, go to Numbers and change the date formatting from there. To Trados Studio, they are just placeables that are not to be translated. | | | Jerzy Czopik Germany Local time: 19:25 Member (2003) Polish to German + ... Dates not entered manualy | Feb 12, 2011 |
Check in Excel, if those dates are not functions.
In that case you would need to change the language of those cells to have the date in the format of that language. | | | Daniel Weston United States Local time: 10:25 French to English + ... TOPIC STARTER So how do I get them to show up in the editor window? | Feb 12, 2011 |
Thanks Jerzy and Adam,
The date fields in the French source file are formatted as dates. I need to switch them from DD/MM/YY to MM/DD/YY format but they do not show up at all in my Trados editor window. Are you saying I have to change the format in Excel - and if so, what to I change it to? Sorry for being thick headed, but I've been working on this file all day and I'm really tired! It's 12:31 at night here... | |

I am not an Excel expert.
But if you select the data cells you can go to Format - Format - Format Cells.
Then chose Date, chose the Locale (location) for your target text and from the field above the format you wish the date to appear.
If the date is a function it will NOT appear in Editor window. Otherwise it should.

Thanks Jerzy,
Yes, I know how to format date fields in Excel - I guess what you are telling me is that they just won't show up in the Studio editor. What is strange is that some of them do and some don't. I'll look at the file tomorrow when I've had a good night's sleep! The dates must have different formats within the same file.
Thanks for your help though, it made me think of some more solutions.

So I strongly assume those dates not appearing in Studio to be formulas.
For dates which appear in Studio use display filter.
To get it go to View, Toolbars - Display filter.
I assume we are dealing with date-only cells now.
For dates in format dd.mm.yyyy enter ^\d\d\.\d\d\.\d\d\d\d$
If you now "traslate" one of the dates the rest should be autopropagated then.
If not, you can copy source to target and use search&replace - however I cannot tell e... See more So I strongly assume those dates not appearing in Studio to be formulas.
