Hi,
I'm trying to solve an urgent problem. I translated a big file. Finishing the translation yesterday night I noticed that there was 1 notice of a mistake in tags. It was late, I was tired and decided to look for it today.
I saved the bilingual file, switched off the computer and went to sleep.
Today it looks as if I made a fatal mistake, because I cannot see any yesterday notices! And I still cannot generate the target file. Is there a way to find out where the mistake is?

Or do I have to translate everything anew? Or copy-paste it without the formatting?

Any help is welcome!
Thanks in advance.

F8 Sep 27, 2011

Have you tried running Verify (F8)?

ctrl-shift-h, then f-8 Sep 27, 2011

Make sure you can see all the tags (ctrl+shift+h), then press F8 to run the verify when the document is open in the editor. This should produce a list of errors and warnings that might help you to find the offending tag. If there is a lot, and this is possible if you are missing lots of formatting tags for example, then scroll through them all looking for something a little different.

Thank you, Emma, Sep 27, 2011

I'm trying it now and still have not found the problem

I hope that when I finish translating the document this mistake is more visible, because for now I see all untranslated segments as mistakes as well.

Isn't it strange that the is no segment number in the mistakes' report? (Wishful thinking!)

Double click Sep 27, 2011

If you double click on the error message you'll be taken to that segment.

Untranslated segments will show up as an error if that's how you have your settings
Tools>options>verification>QA checker>segment verification "error/warning/note for forgotten/empty segments".

Will run verification Sep 27, 2011

when the translation is finished.
Right now, setting aside the untranslated segments, the only mistake it shows, says: "An error occurred while converting the document back to MS WORD", and when I double-click on it, I get a message that "this mistake does not have a specific location in the document", which is understandable.

Will have to try to look through the whole document, as Daniel offered, maybe I'll find it....

Didn't find any other way Sep 27, 2011

ISN"T THAT JUST DUMB???

The verification shows everything is fine (I think it is because I switched the computer off yesterday - Trados counts all the mistakes anew. Today it only said that there are mistakes of saving the target file in WORD, and absolutely refused to discuss them with me.

There MUST be a possibility to find the mistake and correct it

to ignore it.
But the way it is it just doesn't make sense - to me!

Thank you for help.

Other ideas for another occasion. Sep 27, 2011

Sorry to hear that you had to resort to copy and paste.

It's always worth trying to save a target file as soon as you start translating, to check that the file will save properly. If it does, then you know later problems are due to something you have added (or not added) to the target segments.

I think I would have run the original document through the TM (using pretranslate) to see what happens then. Maybe an error message would have come up.

In the hard way ... Sep 29, 2011

Emma, I was desperate because I never ever miss a deadline - and in this case I was pretty close to it.
But having done the "copy-paste" job for 20,000 words with a lot of hyperlinks inside the text (!!!) I did try to open the document again in Trados and pretranslate it, segment after segment.
Having done about 120 segments, I decided to check whether the target document may be generated. Well, the answer was the same - an error while generating the target doc, without any specifi

Having done about 120 segments, I decided to check whether the target document may be generated. Well, the answer was the same - an error while generating the target doc, without any specific location in the doc. The source file was Word. What MAY the problem be? Trados didn't like it? I can't even begin to imagine...

Today I started translating another file. It is not that long and much more simple.
I chose the "full tag" view and began checking and rechecking every segment. What do you think? I have done 10 segments, and have 3 yellow warnings already for "changing the tag order in the segment" (no red mistakes, that G-d!). But there are no visible tags! How on earth am I supposed to know that I've moved smth if I can't even see it?!
