I suppose this is just a poll as opposed to an opinion poll.
Antarctica, really! | Feb 18, 2012 |

Hi,
Really, we have colleague(s?) living in Antarctica ??? The poll displays 0.3% of responders in this area.
If this is true, I assure them of my deepest respect and admiration.
Sorry, Catherine:
One of my furry, feathered friends hit the Enter key by mistake with one of his Happy Feet. Woops!
They are a frivolous bunch down here. Especially when Antarctica is one of the poll answers.

80% translators live in Europe? and 8% in Asia?? OK. Nothing to say. We can explain it with many reasons (José already indicates one). But many uneducated outsourcers may take wrong decision by seeing this poll. There are many examples of job posting in ProZ.com which demand native English speakers to translate Bengali or Hindi documents into English! Because those outsourcers already knew that most of the translators live in Europe and are the scholars of all languages of the world!! This p... These are data that proz.com already has. The only relevant supplementary information that a poll like this might illuminate would be to give an idea of how many translators are currently living temporarily away from their home base, or some such.
I for my part would rather see less frequent polls that offer more interesting and provocative questions than daily polls with such gems as "What is your favorite color?" and "If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?"

When I checked it, 80%+ were in Europe. However this was just before noon GMT, while most of North America was still asleep on a Saturday morning.
Maybe an interesting poll would be "what time zone are you in?". If there aren't so many options, ranges could be used.
How true! I just turned my computer on, here in western Canada. We should wait 10-12 hours and look at the results again.
As far as the polls are concerned, I take it they are just for fun. One cannot expect statistically accurate results about serious matters.
I live 'chez moi', as does everyone who is not either homeless or living at someone else's for whatever reason.

I agree. Simple polls are encouraged, difficult ones are eschewed, apparently.
Well, at least my suspicions are confirmed. Proz is more popular in Europe than in the U.S.A.

Then there is the possibility that it is just the activity of responding to Proz polls that is more popular in Europe. Perhaps those in the continents beginning with "A" like Proz just fine, but for some reason ignore the polls.

Which is why I said this is not a matter of opinion, but a matter of fact.
Yes, if someone is really interested in the stats, then ProZ no doubt knows.
Yes, this is no doubt just for fun... but when there is no point, where is the fun?

Yep, the most basic statistical information, for fun or otherwise, to be drawn from a poll like this is to be taken with a pinch of salt. It basically shows where folks who replied to the poll live. And that means what it means. Nothing to do with getting an idea of where ProZ memebers do in fact live.
Just for fun. Sometimes fun is neither use nor ornament. Might I also add that we each have our own idea of fun. I'm going back to my previous ways and am not even going to look in on polls any more. Guess I'm just not fun!

Translation hub Antarctica | Feb 18, 2012 |
Isn't it marvelous that Antarctica seems to have the same number of translators as Australia, New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific combined? That's the spirit! I assume interpreters outnumber translators down there, as, to my knowledge, penguins can't read.
