Powwow June 30, 2007, scheduled at the premises of Allied Modlingua Services, New Delhi, was held successfully.
During this informal meet a total of 20 translators for Indian as well as foreign languages from Delhi and surrounding region were present to discuss the agenda “ Indian Languages and relevance of CAT Tools with special reference to Xliff Translation Editor a CAT tool product produced by Heartsome Holdings” .
The meet started with informal talk on CAT tools, fonts for Indian languages, importance of unicode system and various tying key boards used in India languages.
This meet also saw presence of a few office bearers of Indian Translators Association which has recently been recognized by FIT (Federation Internationale des Traducteurs). Vice President of ITA India Mr. C.M Rawal presented his thoughts on various types of fonts used in Hindi and Indian languages in connection with CAT tools. He did a comparative study of flexibility of fonts used in leading CAT tools including TRADOS, WORDFAST and XLIFF TRANSLATION EDITOR.
After Mr. Rawal had presented his thoughts, Mr. Ravi Kumar demonstrated how to use Xliff Translation Editor a product of Heartsome Holdings Pte, Singapore. He started with most basic aspects of CAT tools like creation of xliff files from RTF files and making use of four compartment screen to effectively create memory, and recycle the same for next similar files. He also showed how this tool helps in maintaining quality and consistency.
For many translators, demo on CAT tool was a first encounter with technology of this kind that not only helps in completing project in less time, rather it helps in maintaining quality and consistency.
During this meeting it was also decided to organize similar workshops in near future, and participants extended since thanks to Proz.com for creating such a wonderful platform of interaction. ▲ Collapse
