Translation - English Now we turn to the lexical features of Chaghatay's formation stage, a topic which we have intentionally saved for discussion in this section.
The foundational vocabulary in the lexicon of the Chaghatay language is common to all Turkic languages. In particular, it is common (or basically common) to the languages of the Turkic tribes that inhabited Central Asia in the era in question. The preservation status of words from old Turkic which were used in Chaghatay is not quite the same as in the languages of the Uyghur-Qarluq group. However, because of the lexical structure of the language, in particular the comparative instability of its common vocabulary, we have not put forward the preservation of the Chaghatay lexicon or its rate of redundancy in present day languages as a standard of assessment of the Chaghatay language.
Chaghatay is distinguished from medieval Uyghur written literary language by its use of several thousand Arabic and Persian words. The common people of that era were, of course, unable to understand these Arabic and Persian words. Science and culture were not developed as they are today, and there was no possibility for the masses to encounter literary language via newspapers and journals, books, movies and drama, radio and television and other modern media. In a situation where the vast majority of people were illiterate, it was natural that the uneducated common person did not understand not only Arabic and Persian loan words, but also some Turkic words and terms used in the literary language.

On their way, they caught a fleeting glimpse of a small deer standing at the foot of a hill. With a single bound, it disappeared just as suddenly as it had appeared. Now appearing, now disappearing, the small deer led the king on a merry chase. Upon reaching a certain place, the king’s horse stopped suddenly and became rooted to the spot. Noticing the white foam-like lather all over its body, the king thought his steed must have stopped from sheer exhaustion.
But then the king's eyes fell upon a long-haired woman sitting about ten steps away, looking at the ground. She came to his attention so abruptly, it was as though she had fallen from the sky. As quick as lightning, the thought came to him that she might be an evil spirit, and his heart began to beat wildly.
