Translation of historical research essay
A fascinating article with an innovative view of, and approach to, a not too distant past, Allende's Chile as viewed from the South. Fills a gap in the existing histories of the period. A sharp analysis with amazing insights. Absolutely worth reading, a total must. And a challenging joy having been able to translate it in direct contact with the author.

Five page.2.088 words translation of an engineer's C.V.
The difficulty of this project consisted in the very poor English it was drafted in, perhaps due to the fact that the C.V. proprietor's native language was French, and the multiplicity of technical terms regarding the fields of railways and communications.

English to Spanish: 6th ProZ.com Translation Contest - Entry #3709
Source text - English Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

Translation - English Where are you, Lamia, on what beach, in which bed, which hotel lobby, where will it reach you, this letter that I shall hand over to an indifferent clerk who will paste the stamps on it, tell me the price of postage and not even look at me, just go through the motions. Everything is imprecise, possible and improbable: that you read it, that it never reaches you, that it does reach you and you don’t read it, entrapped by more demanding games; or that you do read it between sips of wine, or in the midst of this or that other answer to such questions as those indescribably fortunate beings who are able to share you at a meal or a gathering with friends, will be always asking of you; yes, a random series of instants or moods, the envelope peeping out from your bag and which you decide to open because you are bored, or which you have buried deep between a comb and a nail file, among loose coins and slips of paper with addresses or notes. But if you do read it, because I cannot bear the idea that you won’t, even if only to break it off with a moue of ennui, if you do read it up to here, up to this word here which clings to your eyes and seeks to draw your gaze onto the next lines, if you do read it, Lamia, why should you care about anything that I wish to tell you, certainly not about the fact that I love you, because this you already know since forever and ever and you don’t give a damn and it is not news, it really is no news to you, there, in that place where you will be loving some other woman or just watching the river flow of women that the street wind blows onto your table and sweeps away in slow drifts, women who for an instant shall offer up to you their runs and their figureheads, the multicolored regattas that one of them shall have unbeknownst won when you rise to follow her, having singled her out among the sunset crowds, and you accost her at precisely the right time, in the precisely right doorway where your smile, your question, your manner as you offer her the key to the night, shall precisely be hawk, feast, surfeit.

Translation - English IT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED THAT:
I)Petitioner entered an appearance (as recorded on f. 5), bringing a petition for divorce against M.C., based on the following facts and grounds: they married on 15 October 1970 (certified copy of marriage certificate attached); shortly afterwards, serious rows and altercations started occurring on a regular basis due to the husband’s ill-tempered disposition, which made it impossible to continue living together and triggered the de facto separation of husband and wife; a daughter was born to the couple on 26 September 1971, and an agreement on the issues of custody, visitation rights and child support therefor was presented to this Court, seeking judicial homologation thereof (as recorded on f. 17 and 18). Plaintiff offered evidence and mentioned art. 187 and art. 148, sub-paragraph 6 of the Civil Code in support of her plea, praying that divorce be granted on the above referred grounds.
II)Per judicial order of 17 October 1987 the provisional separation of the couple was decreed, and the divorce petition duly communicated to defendant, who failed to answer and was therefore charged with, and then declared to be in, default (as recorded on f. 8).
III)Upon the case being opened for proof, proof certified on f. 21 was submitted. Having both parties waived an extension of the period allowed for submission of evidence, and having also waived final pleadings (f. 20), proceedings were then referred to the State Attorney for the latter's advisory opinion.

Spanish to English: Ruling on Trademark Piracy Detailed field: Law: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright
Translation - English 15th Civil Court of 1st Instance.
A review of the most basic concepts relative to the protection of proprietary rights conferred by trademarks or patents to the holders thereof, will reveal that such protection might essentially be defined as “a right of exclusivity”.
The proprietor of a trademark or a patent, during the effective term thereof, has an exclusive right to use his or her invention or trademark and to license others to do so.
Therefore, when any unauthorized party makes use of somebody else’s trademark or invention, said party is thereby infringing upon the rights of the proprietors and violating the applicable law.
A section of the relevant Uruguayan law mentions a number of possible offenses under the caption of “Criminal Provisions”. However, it is not concerned only with infringements punishable under the criminal law, as it has been frequently pointed out by court decisions, but includes a variety of situations where the infringements violate provisions under the civil law as well.
Said provisions mention unauthorized use, forgery, adulteration, imitation, bottling of beverages under a third-party trademark, sale of goods under unauthorized brandnames, etc.

Translation - English Stock markets receded globally, in a week marked by a low trading volume over the Christmas period.
In the U.S., markets wrapped up the week in red. The largest drops were seen in the financial and discretionary consumption sectors. The week was marked by the mostly negative economic data and downward adjustments on corporate results and analysts’ earning forecasts. Notable among the economic data were a larger- than-expected drop in home sales (see Comment), a deeper-than-foreseen plunge in consumption during the third quarter, and the largest increase in 26 years of initial applications for unemployment benefits. The two last days of the week showed improvements, driven by the GMAC announcement (see Chart of the Week), better consumer spending results than expected, and November orders for durable goods, as well as by rallying prices for energy and materials. On the other hand, sovereign bonds experienced losses during this week for the first time in two months, whereas high investment grade-, high yield corporate bonds showed again a week of earnings.
In Europe, the week also closed with drops in quotes.
In the U.K., the third quarter GDP variance reflected the steepest drop since 1990. In addition, the approved number of mortgage loans was published and showed a year-to-date fall in November of 61%. This result, representing the minimum level in 14 years, fueled forecasts for further drops of 10% in the prices for homes in 2009.
Japan on the other hand, succeeded in closing with earnings for the third consecutive week, despite the bleak economic data. Toyota reported the first loss in its financials over 71 years, and industrial production during November took the steepest plunge over 55 years. This notwithstanding, the measures announced by the monetary authority, plus the weakening of the yen vs. the dollar this week for the first time in two months, encouraged the upward trends of the export sector.
The emerging markets resumed adjusting their figures negatively. The signs of economic deterioration apparently continued to prompt the adjustment of growth prospects and corporate results expectations downwards, despite a lesser impact on production costs and consumer’s budget due to the significant plunge in the price of commodities, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.

I hold a degree from the University of Uruguay's Law School, qualifying me as a Public [Certified] Translator of English and Spanish, after a four-year course in translation. During my studies and after my graduation I have attended, and continue to do so, several continuing education seminars and training courses organized both by ProZ and by the CTPU (Public Translators of Uruguay Assn., by its acronym in Spanish). [Please refer to my CV for additional details on my education and credentials].
All along my more than 35 years of employment I have performed extensive translation on the most diverse subjects, and particularly so during my 17-year stretch as CFO´s Assistant at the Uruguay Branch of BankBoston N.A., up to my retirement in the year 2002. In this capacity, I dealt mainly with the dissemination and translation of Boston Law Office's Transmittals regarding compliance issues and Corporate Directives, translation into English of Risk Council Assessments for Head Office reporting , and any documents from the Head Office's International Accounting Department, internal and external Audit Teams, etc.
Before that, I worked for well over fourteen years, first as a bilingual assistant in trading companies dealing with commodities, then in consulting engineering firms, and afterwards, independently as an agent for European factories of automotive spare parts.
Working in industries of such varied fields as outlined above has provided me with a unique background and expertise. In addition, my University four-year law-oriented career has contributed to build and refine my translator skills.
I am thorough, dedicated, and professional, and really put my soul into what I do.
