I plan to attend this great event. Let me know what I need to bring. | | | Marieta McCune United States Local time: 03:38 Bulgarian to English + ... What is it like to go to a Powwow? | Oct 1, 2020 |
I don’t know what’s it like to go to a powwow. Is there videos of past events somewhere? I always want to go to different countries on business if I can afford it and if it is worth spending money to be there. I wish I would meet in person other translators to exchange our experiences! But now with this virus... Is this realistic to want something like that, I wonder... ? What about you? Have you been to a powwow before? | | | Paul Dixon Brazil Local time: 06:38 Portuguese to English + ... In memoriam
Dear Marieta, It is great to go to a powwow, you are sure to meet people and do networking. I am a regular powwow goer and have organised Powwows in Lorena, Guarulhos, São Caetano and São Paulo. The frequency of powwows has declined somewhat but they are still regularly held. The best known is the Seaside Powwow (CSPW) in Santos which this year (pandemic allowing) will reach its 16th edition. See more Dear Marieta, It is great to go to a powwow, you are sure to meet people and do networking. (Santos is a beach town near São Paulo, famous for its beach, coffee museum, (overpriced) fish market, historical 'bonde' (tram), and Santos FC where Pelé and a famous fall guy (now with PSG) once played) Most powwows are Saturday lunches at restaurants, although there have been some at night and even at translators' homes (in the party room of their building). Attendance ranges from one (I scheduled a powwow in São Caetano and nobody came) to 30 (the latest seaside powwow). Powwows are usually for socialising and networking only. I believe that in Europe powwows include guest speakers but this is not common here. So I don't think it would be cost-effective to come to Brazil for a two-hour powwow - unless you plan to visit the country which has a lot to offer, like the wonderful beaches of Rio de Janeiro, the Marvellous City, or even organise a course for the translators here. My suggestion would be to come to one of Brazil's big translation events, either Proft or the ABRATES Conference (next one scheduled for 2021, pandemic permitting). These last two or three days, and are much bigger than the average powwow (700 people attend ABRATES). Most events have at least one powwow associated with them. At the ABRATES event, there was a even a city tour around historical São Paulo with a stop for a coffee, organised by famous translator Isabel Vidigal. There is a fee for these big events, the most expensive being the ABRATES conference. We also have important international speakers participating in these major events. Judy Jenner and Maryam Abdi are just two famous names who have been here recently. Powwows, on the other hand, have no participation fee, just what you eat/drink and any travel/accommodation costs. You could also organise a Powwow in Bulgaria. Basically you just choose a restaurant, set a date, and open the list so interested parties may sign up and say whether they will attend (Yes/Maybe/No). Then you call the restaurant and reserve a table (if necessary) and wait for the people to come. Participation or organisation of powwows gives you BrowniZ points but now with restriction of services for non-paying members BrowniZ are not much use. In the good old days you could use BrowniZ for things like bidding for jobs. I'll try to post a link of one powwow that I have organised, with photos. (Not all powwows have photos posted) If you do decide to visit Brazil, o Brasil te aguarda de braços abertos! (Brazil awaits you with open arms) ▲ Collapse | | | Isabel Vidigal Brazil Local time: 06:38 Member (2005) English to Portuguese + ... To Marieta, what is a powwow. | Sep 23, 2021 |
Marieta, thanks for asking about the Powwow. As you can see, we changed again the date of this Powwow because nobody wants to have health problems in the middle of the pandemic. Usually, Powwows are just a get-together in any place (restaurant, bar, open-air activity) as an excuse to meet old friends or new people, to get information from colleagues, make new friends, make new partnerships. This one would be special because we are planning to do it at Angela Levy's place (she is about ninety years old, a very sweet and happy lady and tells interesting stories!) in the form of a Talent Show. Only 10 people would have time to present their show because we want to have time to talk, interact, and eat/drink. It would be great to have you here, but it is better to wait until we are closer to the event's date to see how things will be then. ▲ Collapse | |
