I am studying to be an interpreter, but in the translation world it seems that to do translation you have to use SDL Trados and other tools, what i dont understand is that isnt that defeating the object, i mean we spend all our time and money learning another language and improving our vocabulary only to use Trados to do translations, so then what was the point to learn another language if Trados does it for us.
please let me know how translators use these tools.

that doesnt answer my question, i wasnt asking what it is but why people who have studied and become expert translators would need software.
for example: i was educated in Spain and after many years i qualify as a professional translator, i would have thought that all the education that one has done and a good dictionary would be more appropriate. Otherwise anybody non-qualified can just use the software and get perfect translations or not??

Thats not my reasoning at all.
What i am trying to say is that surely the training has prepared you to be able to translate from ST to TT and back.
If a person has studied translation, i would think that thats is to be able to translate without needing the aid of Trados or CAT and only using the dictionary to check some words or not??

By the same logic, why would anybody want to train as a designer, when CAD tools (computer aided design) will do it all for you?
Both CAT and CAD tools are only useful in the hands of a professional.

ok....
so i have been reading about these pieces of software.
agree that they speed up and aid the translators job and provide terminology to the translator....
and agree that jobs are time based projects so time is of essence and that the work has to be correct.
but I still think that CATs and Trados can make some translators lazy or not??

When we learn, we all take notes, make vocabulary lists and memorize useful phrases and idioms.
I deeply admire interpreters, because they have to have a lot of these things in their heads. But I know they take notes and make lists too.
Really, a CAT is a way of organising these notes and lists and retrieving earlier work for future reference.

If you have translated standard phrases before, like 'yours sincerely' or 'page 3 of 27' then it can insert 'page 4 of 27 or even 'page 103 of 117' automatically. The same goes for other details abut your clients and special subjects.
It is a way of gaining access to what you have learnt, but it is no substitute for real skills! It is empty when you buy it, and you decide for yourself what to store in it.

Why do you use Office programs, you can write XML in notepad and save as .docx if you really want to?
Better yet, turn off spellchecker in Word, this makes us lazy too...
Any program that lets you focus on the translation not on doing repetitive tasks is useful.
These two are the same in essence
1) Using styles and all those nice formatting buttons in Word, not inputting (writing out) each XML tag manually.

I translate medical texts. Some are quite technical and repetitive (documents for pharmaceutical manufacture and marketing approval) and some are quite unique (patient discharge reports, case studies, etc.)
Here are two useful sides to a CAT tool applied to medical translations:

It will remind me how I have translated certain terms (names of diseases, drugs, etc.) that I have researched in the past (maybe 2 weeks ago - in which case I'll probably remember it - or maybe 2 years ago, in which case I'll have forgotten it). They won't come up as an identical sentence, but the CAT will highlight any hits in my termbase, or I can perform a quick search (called concordance) to see if I have translated this word before.

What is the point of having to type the same sentence over and over again? Some CAT tools also keep the ST format/font,... on the TT, which certainly saves the translator some time.
