Just don't get this one! So far have produced a fairly literal translation, but I'm very doubtful as I don't really understand it.

Yo entiendo que la frase hace referencia a la actualidad de los hechos pasados, cómo vemos/qué recordamos/qué significado tienen hoy los hechos (violentos) del pasado. Entonces, yo lo traduciría así:
The actuality (present) of the past is a sign of the end of the century.
It is not the past, but how we view that past today that is a sign of the end of the century.

I don't think a literal translation makes any sense at all here, and I'm not sure that the language in Spanish really works either--except in a very opaque and allusive way.
The author was writing toward the end of the century and it sounds like the piece of writing in question dealt with the events of the century that was then drawing to a close. Thus my inference as to the intended meaning, and my suggestion of a translation that is a rendering of said meaning in comprehensible English.

: I really like 'fin de siècle' (and its hints of Angst) and the rest, except that I feel the notion of 'awareness' is eclipsed (after all the past is always present!)
